How to write a resume with no work experience

Every resume starts blank. If you're looking for your first job or an internship, your problem isn't a lack of content: it's that you don't yet know which of the things you've done counts as experience. Spoiler: far more than you think.

What counts as experience (even if it wasn't a job)

Recruiters hiring junior profiles don't expect years at a company: they look for signals that you know how to work, learn, and take responsibility. All of these count and deserve a spot on your resume:

  • Relevant academic projects (capstone, team assignments, hackathons)
  • Personal projects: an app, a blog, an online store, a portfolio
  • Internships, volunteering, and student clubs (organizing events IS project management)
  • “Unrelated” jobs (waiter, retail clerk): they show responsibility, customer contact, and working under pressure
  • Completed certifications and online courses

The right structure for a junior resume

Without extensive work experience, the order of the sections changes: put what sells most at the top. Start with a short summary stating what you studied, what you can do, and what you're looking for. Then education (in detail: honors, specialization, standout projects). Next projects and hands-on experience, and finally skills and languages.

Keep it to one page. A two-page junior resume signals filler, and both ATS and recruiters notice.

How to write achievements when you were “just” studying

The difference between a flat resume and one that lands interviews is in the verbs and the numbers. “Member of the programming team” says nothing; “Built the payments module of an expense-tracking app used by 50 students” says a lot. Quantify what you can: team size, users, grades, deadlines met.
